Situated 45 minutes west of Perpignan in the foothills of the Pyrénées, Vernet Les Bains is an ancient spa village with a wide range of facilities making it a wonderful location to holiday or take a short break. Swimming pools, parks, boules. Nice shops, cafes and restaurants as well. You can enjoy the sun & the glorious sandy beaches of the Mediterranean, or take to the mountains for climbing or walking. In the winter, ski in one of several local resorts; Font Romeu, Les Angles, Eyne, Pyrenees 2000 - even Andorra is in reach ! The village has 1300 inhabitants and is 'alive' all year round. Thermal spas abound in the area - a full centre for 'cures' in Vernet itself and a lovely open air spa at St. Thomas les Bains.

Equipped to a high standard, this comfortable first floor apartment, set within large communal gardens, has superb views from the two terraces (one covered and one large & sunny). Built on a hillside (hence the superb views), this first floor apartment has an entrance at ground level (for all practical purposes, the apartment is on one level). Entry is into the hallway, from which most of the other rooms are accessed. Immediately to the right is the sitting / dining room, with views through patio windows, onto the large, sunny terrace & the Canigou beyond. This room contains a six seater dining table, several comfortable chairs, a sofa, a television & radio/CD/cassette player as well as a large & well-stocked bookshelf. Off this room is the well-fitted kitchen with plenty of work-surfaces, refrigerator, hob, microwave, dishwasher and breakfast bar & table. Conveniently, the kitchen also has patio doors leading straight onto the terrace. This large, sunny terrace has plenty of space for dining alfresco or simply soaking up the sun & the view (not to mention the local wine). There is a built-in BBQ & adjacent marble sink. Also leading from the sitting room, up 2 stairs, is the main bedroom. This room has a double bed & has patio doors leading onto the covered terrace. From the other side of the hallway, a door to the left leads to a bedroom equipped with bunk beds. This room has patio doors out onto a small patio. Further along the hall, again on the left is the bathroom, complete with toilet, bath & shower. Next to the bathroom is an additional separate toilet. At the end of the hallway is a further large bedroom, which is furnished with twin beds. All rooms have central heating radiators. Below the apartment is a cave containing a washing machine & tumble dryer, with lots of storage space for bikes, skis, etc. A garage is available. There is a new Cot and Mattress (but bring your own baby bedding !). There are toys for children of various ages, but we ask that parents take responsibility for what they let their children play with ! There are beach toys and picnic stuff as well.

Places of Interest

This area combines culture, history, and outdoor activity for all seasons and ages, Mediterranean cuisine and the best climate in France! The picturesque medieval walled settlement of Villefranche de Conflent is 5 mins drive away. Explore the town, the fort above, the underground caves and take a ride on the Little Yellow Train clinging to the side of the Pyrénées and finishing in the ski resorts. Swim chill and play at the lake at Vinca, less than 20 mins away. Also there is a Water Theme Park at Err (as well as lovely open-air hot spas at St Thomas les Bains and others 'wild' in the area). When it is really hot ask the locals for 'Sahorre Beach' up in the mountain streams. Try the Mediterranean beach at LaRoque (south edge of Argeles) for the start of the Costa Brava type scenery. Throughout the mountains and foothills there are walks ranging from the afternoon ramble to those which may require an overnight in a hostel! Themes of interest include the Cathar Castles, Geology, The Iron Trails and even Solar Power. Mount Canigou, the sacred mountain of Catalonia, and the Abbey of St Martin du Canigou are close at hand. Further afield there are lakes, vineyards and Caves, Spas and centres of Art, Music, Prehistory, Fauna and Flora. The area also has rafting, canoeing, sailing, canyoning, windsurfing and outdoor adventure parks. Not to mention horse riding, fishing & cycling. To the east, from about 45 mins away, are the glorious sandy beaches of Canet, St.Cyprien and Argeles and the picturesque port towns of Collioure and Banyuls. The area, with its warm & sunny microclimate, enjoys some of the mildest weather in France, making the property ideal for holidays throughout the year. Several ski resorts, including Font-Romeu, are about 45 mins away, so a week in Vernet Les Bains could easily include some days skiing. Ski by day plus open air thermal spa on the way back !
