Betpouy is a small rural village ( pop. 75 ) set in an idyllic part of France close to the Pyrenees. The house is ideally situated for day trips to either the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts, or Spain. Lourdes, Toulouse and Biarritz, with all their various attractions, are all within easy reach. The mountains themselves (40 km.) offer many diversions (walking, lakes, horse-riding, skiing etc.) both in summer and winter. The small town of Castelnau-Magnoac ( 5km. ) has an excellent restaurant, post office, small supermarket and various shops. Every Saturday there is a market held there where you can purchase fresh, locally grown produce. Lannemezan (20 kms.) is the nearest large town, with a superb general market every Wednesday, 5 large supermarkets and a wide variety of shops. Large hypermarkets can be found in Auch and Tarbes. As usual in this region you do not have to travel far to find superb restaurants / ferme auberges which offer excellent food at very reasonable prices.

The house is situated next to the owners converted barn. It is set in an acre of garden that is surrounded by farmland (maize crops) with a small river running on the bottom edge of the property. There are spectacular views of the mountains when the crops are harvested. The accommodation consists of a large, comfortably furnished sitting room complete with wood-burner, t.v. and video. There is a door leading onto the garden. There is a large dining room, again with wood burner, furnished with table and 6 chairs (extendable to seat up to 12). Leading off from this is the well appointed kitchen with gas cooker, microwave, fridge/freezer, ample work surfaces and sufficient crockery, pots and pans etc. for up to 10 people. We also have a separate utility room with storage, washing machine and dishwasher. There are 2 bathrooms, one downstairs with bath/shower, bidet, washbasin and toilet and one upstairs, en suite with the master bedroom, with shower enclosure, washbasin and toilet. The two larger bedrooms both have double beds, and one also has an extra single bed. The third bedroom is split with 1 double bed and 1 single bed (ideal for a couple with a small child). There is also a double futon in the sitting room, and travel cots are available if required to increase the capacity to 10 + infants. Bed linen and tea towels are provided but not personal bath/hand towels. Outside is a porch with seating, and the garden has table /chairs and a BBQ. There is an above ground pool (7.5 x 3.5 metres) of which you have sole use. There is also a table tennis table and a golf net. In summer the garden is totally surrounded by cornfields, leaving it private and secluded. There is ample parking.

Places of Interest

Locally there is tennis at Castlenau-Magnoac (5km), two excellent golf courses, both within 20-25 mins, and leisure park at Lannemezan (20 mins). Slightly further afield, up into the mountains, you have all the usual leisure and sporting activities associated with major ski resorts. In the summer there are wonderful, well marked footpaths through the Parc National des Pyrenees, with some of the most spectacular scenery and lakes in Europe. Also worth a visit is the observatory at the Pic de midi de Bigorre. Lourdes (approx 45mins.) is an interesting experience. Visit the shrine and take the waters, take a ride through the caverns, or browse round the Musee Pyrenee. Toulouse (approx.1hr 20mins.) has a lovely centre and is excellent for shopping and exploring the fine restaurants serving regional cuisine. You can also visit the Cite de L'espace space park. Tolouse Blagnac has regular scheduled inexpensive flights and is convenient for flying down and hiring a car. Biarritz (1 hr 45mins) has 3 good beaches and probably some of the best surfing in Europe. There are also 2 casinos and the usual variety of restaurants. It also has daily Ryan air flights if your preference is flying. Auch (approx.40 mins.) is a Cathedral town, capital of the Gers region and home to the fictional Muscateer D'Artagnan. It has busy market days and some typically French side streets to explore. Many of the local towns have set market days and during the summer there are many fetes and events to occupy your time, and give you a true feeling for the French way of life. Make sure that you try the local duck speciality, magret de canard, in at least one restaurant. Despite all the possibilities it's surprising how often people decide to just stay in the garden and enjoy the peace and tranquillity!
