Property Location

Le Logis du Paradis is a lovely old complex of buildings dating from 1712, including its former Cognac distillery, built around a large, enclosed, classic Charentais courtyard. It is set in the charming, sleepy hamlet of La Magdeleine on the banks of the small river Né in the midst of the vines of the Grand Cru Grande Champagne Cognac region; famous for the very best Cognacs and Pineaux. Close to the pretty town of Barbezieux 10 minutes drive away which has an exit from the main Angouleme – Bordeaux dual carriageway, the RN10, yet only 30 minutes from historic Cognac and the attractive, busy city of Angoulême with its TGV station and shortly its airport served from London, within easy reach of four other international airports (Poitiers, La Rochelle, Limoges and Bordeaux), Le Logis du Paradis is the ideal location for a tranquil and stimulating stay.

Description of Property

Sally and Nick Brimblecombe (long time French Tour Operator and founder of Vacances en Campagne, La France des Villages and The Grand Touring Club) bought this property in an unrenovated state in 2005 and have sympathetically refurbished an 18th century wing to a high standard to provide 5 comfortable and spacious guest rooms. Sally has furnished the interiors with elegant linen and family antiques, mixing influences from her colonial upbringing with classic English and French styles. B&B costs from €95 - €110 per night for two. Description of Rooms Each spacious bedroom has a Super King-size bed (1.80cm wide x 2m long), which can also be converted into two singles (90 cm wide) if preferred. The two rooms on the ground floor can also be interconnecting, as can two of the rooms on the first floor. Each of our five guest bedrooms has its own en suite bathroom with bath and separate WC. Except in the case of our fifth bedroom where the WC is within the en suite bathroom. In addition, the two rooms on the ground floor have walk-in showers, whilst those upstairs have baths with hand showers. All linen and towels are provided. In each bedroom there are comfortable chairs with space to relax. The two downstairs bedrooms have French windows to their own terrace areas with garden furniture. The three upstairs bedrooms are even larger and have individually controlled air conditioning. All bedrooms have good heating for the cooler seasons. All bedrooms have a modern flat screen TV and a satellite decoder with large choice of channels. Internet access is available by Wifi in all rooms. Guests have use of their own large, airy breakfast/dining room for meals or otherwise to take them just outside on a south facing terrace shaded by a mature lime tree. Just beyond the courtyard is an enclosed, lush walled garden, with further terraces, lawn and the bar and the delightful swimming pool with garden furniture and reclining chairs. Beyond this is the walled park “a l’anglais” with two avenues of trees and from these extensive grounds there are views of the vineyards and hills of the Grand Champagne. Bicycles are available and guests have access to documented attractive walks and cycling routes in the nearby countryside.

Places of Interest

LOCAL PLACES OF INTEREST Where do you begin? The Charente is a very pretty departement with what King Henri IV described as “the most beautiful river in my kingdom”, the Charente, running through the middle of it. Here we have fabulous Romanesque churches from 12th century and villages and small towns built in the fine white Sireuil stone. In the west are the vineyards of the Cognac region; in the east are the pastures and wooded hills of the Charente Limousine towards Limoges. In the south the area blends into the Perigord. It is easy just to meander on the small local roads and laze on the banks of the Charente and go no further. However we have developed a series of more structured trips, each being a fairly easy day out from here, even in a classic car! These include: The Cognac and Grande Champagne trail La Rochelle and the Islands (Ile d’Oleron and Ile de Re) Royan and the Gironde Estuary (Caviar and Lampreys) Bordeaux, the Medoc and the Grand Crus St Emilion and Pomerol The Perigord (Dordogne) and pre-history Limoges and the Confolentais We have attractive routes planned and can recommend lunch stops as well as places of interest.
